THE BURNING QUESTION: What is Infrared Heat?!

“Infra” means “below” in Latin and infrared literally means below red. It is a wavelength directly below the color red on the electromagnetic spectrum, which transfers energy.  So there is no visible color to be seen.

Yoga and other fitness modalities with infrared heat are conducted in a room heated by infrared radiation. The heat penetrates deep into the body, providing benefits like increased flexibility, improved circulation, detoxification through sweating, and potential muscle relaxation. This is considered more beneficial than traditional hot yoga and fitness due to the deeper heating effect of infrared rays. You may experience:

  • Therapeutic relief: Unlike conventional hot yoga, infrared heat penetrates deeper into the muscles and tissues, warming the body from within rather than just heating the air around it. Infrared heaters transfer warmth to the body, gently increasing circulation.
  • Improved flexibility: The deep heat helps muscles relax and lengthen, allowing for deeper stretches and improved flexibility.
  • Enhanced circulation: Infrared rays stimulate blood flow, which can lead to better oxygen delivery to muscles and improved recovery.
  • Detoxification: Sweating induced by infrared heat is often considered to help the body eliminate toxins.
  • Potential benefits for pain relief: By delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the cells in your body, infrared heat may help alleviate muscle soreness and inflammation.

Additional Benefits of Infrared Heat:

  • Stress reduction
  • Improved sleep
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Skin health: Stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of your skin.
  • Boosted immune function: Regular infrared exposure can increase white blood cell production and stimulate the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
  • Sun-like warmth: The physiological feeling of infrared heat is unmatched. Exposure to infrared heat gives the same sensation as sitting in the sun, without the damaging rays of sunlight.
  • Hypoallergenic: Unlike forced air heating systems that need constant maintenance to keep air filters clean, radiant heating panels do not blow dust or allergens.

Important Considerations:

  • Hydration: Due to increased sweating, staying properly hydrated is crucial during infrared classes.
  • Listen to your body: Beginners should start with shorter sessions and modify poses as needed to avoid overheating or discomfort.
  • Medical conditions: Consult a doctor before practicing in infrared heat if you have any medical conditions, such as heart issues or low blood pressure, or if you are pregnant.
